If you've ever spent some time bumbling around Reddit, Tumblr, or DeviantArt, you may have noticed a strange fixation on Sonic the Hedgehog. Skyler King is a college student from Sacramento who runs the Twitter account @BadSonicFanArt and the related tumblr. It's really fantastic.
Skyler answered some questions for BuzzFeed about the account and why Sonic has this strange grip on young men on the Internet:
Why do you think Sonic is so popular for fan art?
I think it's because the Sonic series kept reinventing itself. With that it kept bringing in a new group of fans each time, each more awkward than the last.
Why do you think there's so much BAD Sonic fan art?
I wish I knew. I'm sure there's some sort of explanation out there, but the short answer is because Sonic fans are... weird.
What is the worst piece you've found?
I've seen so much that I can't decide what is the worst. I mean, let's be honest, they're all pretty terrifying in their own way.
Where do you find most of the fan art for the Twitter account?
It's usually a Google search I think of off the top of my head. I ask myself, "What sort of weird Sonic fetish have I not found yet?" and I go to town. I also get a lot of submissions from followers so I tweet those, too.
What's the reaction to the Twitter been so far?
I didn't expect it to take off like it did. I'm glad people enjoy it, but now it means I need to subject myself to more horrible pictures. Check out the tumblr, too!
