Inside The Hunt For ISIS In Iraq

Hawre Khalid, a Kirkuk-based photographer, goes inside police raids as Iraqi authorities search for ISIS suspects in their city.

Police in Kirkuk have been conducting raids across the city in the north of Iraq, as the region grapples with the growth of Isis. Hawre Kaid, a photographer based in Kirkuk, has been working on a long-term project to document these activities.

The raids by the police are often the result of tip offs from the community about suspicious persons, and are often followed up by interrogations and investigations by the police and legal authorities. Many of the suspects are released for lack of evidence. Others are allegedly executed on suspicion of terrorism. According to Amnesty International, “there were 61 executions in Iraq during 2014 of persons sentenced to death for terrorism related offenses, in most cases after unfair trials.”
