This is an early patent that's concerned less with hardware than with a specific proposal for augmented reality display during sports — in other words, this does not mean that Microsoft is planning on building an AR product right now. But just as surely as Google is banking on Project Glass being the future mobile computing, Microsoft it exploring the possibility that it might be right.

Augmented reality glasses, should Microsoft eventually make them, probably won't look anything like this. But there's a good chance that the next great gadget war — think the console wars, the desktop OS wars, the smartphone wars —  will be fought on our faces.
