Is This Google-Owned Robot Adorably Showing Off Or Planning The End Of The Human Race?

It all depends on your perspective.

Good old Boston Dynamics. Makers of the world's uncanniest robots, the Google-owned company keeps reminding us all just how advanced its machines are getting. In its latest feat of whimsical terror (or is it terrifying whimsy), a Boston Dynamics Atlas robot performs the famous Ralph Macchio-training-on-the-log scene from Karate Kid.

The machine, as ever, is inscrutable. What you see in its ritual display will depend on whether you think these robots are here to help us, or systematically annihilate us.

So what exactly is this thing doing?

Is it barely containing its excitement to help out its beloved human masters?

Or is it celebrating the dawn of an epoch of blood and metal?

Is it adorably imitating a ballet dancer in fourth position?

Or is it running diagnostics on its Gather Human Corpses protocol?

Is it showing off with a whimsical flourish worthy of the Folies Bergère?

Or is it demonstrating a brute-force front kick capable of crushing a human chest cavity?

screams echoed in the darkness but the machines made no noise
