Getty Oil Fortune Heir Died From Ulcers, Drugs, And Heart Disease

Andrew Getty's March 31 death has been ruled an accident, the Los Angeles coroner told BuzzFeed News. Autopsy tests showed he had methamphetamine in his system, and was suffering from ulcers and heart disease.

Oil fortune heir Andrew Getty was suffering from heart disease and ulcers, and had methamphetamine in his system at the time of his death, coroner officials said.

Getty — the 47-year-old grandson of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty — was found dead on March 31 in his Hollywood Hills home. Los Angeles County Coroner Watch Commander Larry Dietz told BuzzFeed News on Tuesday that Getty had toxic levels of methamphetamine in his system at the time of his death, and was suffering from heart disease.

Andrew Getty also was suffering from gastrointestinal ulcers. Citing the death certificate, Dietz said the combination of ailments and drugs killed Getty, though the Los Angeles Times listed intestinal hemorrhaging from the ulcers as the ultimate cause of death.

The death has been ruled accidental, Dietz added.

From the outset of the investigation, Andrew Getty's death appeared to accidental.

In a statement to BuzzFeed News after his body was found, the Los Angeles County coroner's office said preliminary observations at the scene did not indicate any trauma or foul play.

Police were first called to the home at 2:20 p.m. regarding a man in distress, Officer Jack Richter told BuzzFeed News. Police described the woman who made the call as a "cooperative witness."

According to the Times, Andrew Getty had taken out a restraining order against a woman two weeks ago prior to his death, although no arrests have been made. And given the autopsy results, earlier media reports that his body had signs of trauma appear to be false.

He moved into the 5,000-square-foot villa overlookibg L.A.'s San Fernando Valley in 1996. But despite his family's wealth and fame, Andrew Getty maintained a minimal online presence and generally stayed out of the public spotlight.

Despite his privacy, a Facebook page appearing to belong to Andrew Getty included several older photos, as well as one image that appeared to be more recent.

Andrew Getty was the son of Gordon Getty and the grandson of J. Paul Getty, who through the oil industry amassed a fortune of $2 billion by the time of his death in 1976.

Gordon sold his family's company, Getty Oil, to Texaco in 1984 for $10 billion. Forbes lists his net worth at $2.1 billion, and the family's at $5 billion.

Andrew was one of Gordon's seven children.
