Serena Williams' Husband Wants To Get Better At Doing His Daughter's Hair But His Approach Divided Opinion

"This is more than hair. This is you saying I care about my little girl."

I'm sure I don't need to introduce you, but this chap is Alexis Ohanian: Reddit co-founder, loving husband to Serena Williams, and doting dad to the adorable Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr.

Ohanian Sr has repeatedly shown he is not only his wife's biggest fan but fiercely protective, like the time he called out a "racist and misogynistic" cartoon of Serena.

So it wasn't that surprising when he tweeted on Thursday that he had applied to join several natural hair Facebook groups, so that he could continue to learn how to take better care of his daughter's hair.

Just applied to join 4 private Natural Hair facebook groups. I hope they don't auto-reject my application when they see my profile photo 😂 I told them it was to keep getting better at doing my daughter's hair.

People thought it was great of him for wanting to learn more.

@alexisohanian This is great. It's cool to see a dad wanting to learn more about how to care for his daughter's natural hair.

@alexisohanian You are an amazing dad, and there is so much that is said in this simple gesture. This is more than hair. This is you saying I care about my little girl. Hair is typically an important thing in a girls’ life. This is you showing her you value her interests.

And, in response, other dads started sharing photos of their own daddy-daughter haircare journeys.

    @alexisohanian Keep up the practice 🙌🏼 #HairLove

@alexisohanian @AmeriNaija You sound like my husband🤣 It’s a learning process you’ll learn something new each day!

@alexisohanian Tis actually one of the best parts of my day - and I'm not ashamed to say a part of Friday night is spent studying YouTube videos.

And people were full of suggestions about other hair communities he could get involved with.

@alexisohanian @RootsDolls is more than happy to have you in ours

@alexisohanian There are a ton of excellent YouTube vids; I’ll bet there are also local meetups. BUT ... I’ll also bet that you could go to the salon once a week with your daughter (date!) and they’ll teach you. I have two daughters and have been too reliant on YouTube. Godspeeed!

@roywoodjr @MatthewACherry I like this world. I want to go there.

FYI Matthew Cherry is the author of a book called Hair Love, illustrated by Vashti Harrison.

#HairLove is now available everywhere books are sold! Pick up a copy today and tag us in your pictures. @VashtiHarrison @KokilaBooks @Tweetpathi @Monica_aYoung @penguinkids

Cherry himself popped up in the replies to the tweet, which has been liked more than 20,000 times.

@franklinleonard @alexisohanian @VashtiHarrison Thanks for sharing Franklin. I do really think you all would enjoy it. It’s really about what parents are willing to do when their kids ask them to do something and they’ll do whatever it takes to figure it out for them.

But some people worried about Alexis trying to join spaces they say aren't made for him and pointed out that other resources are available.

Why do you want to insert yourself in spaces not made for you?? Youtube is free or PAY a black woman to teach you how do to Olympia's hair?? https://t.co/LBA1EOAy1f

@kelechnekoff @alexisohanian @TreasureTress @Afrocenchix In truth you shouldn't be trying to access private groups as they, I presume, safe spaces. There are plenty resources outside of that private group that can help you with Olympia's hair. Our platform and plenty others have lots of info. Happy to help if needed!

And others hinted that he could look closer to home because his own platform, Reddit, has a huge natural hair community.

You definitely own Reddit. You tried it. https://t.co/uwsia4Q8Dp

And some people said that he shouldn't take it personally if he does get rejected, but wished him luck on his daddy hair care journey.

@alexisohanian As a creator of a FB group for Black moms of 12k, those that don’t know who you are may auto-reject you. The creation of safe spaces for various groups/topics is why FB groups are growing. Don’t take it to heart, it’s self-protection! Good luck! ☺️

Seems like he is on the right track.
