A 32-year-old gay man was fatally shot in Greenwich Village Friday night, and police are investigating the incident as a hate crime after learning the suspect made anti-gay remarks according to New York 1. The suspect allegedly asked the victim and another individual he was with if they were "gay wrestlers."

New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who is openly gay, said in a statement she was horrified by the incident.

"I am horrified to learn that last night, a gay man was murdered in my district after being chased out of a Greenwich Village restaurant and assailed by homophobic slurs. I stand with all New Yorkers in condemning this attack. This kind of shocking and senseless violence, so deeply rooted in hate, has no place in a city whose greatest strength will always be its diversity."
