David Letterman, the iconic and arch-ironic fixture of late night television for more than three decades, will host his last episode of The Late Show on May 20, 2015.
From the press release announcing the final episode, CBS President and CEO Les Moonves praised the cranky comic:
David Letterman has given to all of us a remarkable legacy of achievement and creative brilliance that will never be forgotten. It's going to be tough to say goodbye, but I know we will all cherish the shows leading up to Dave's final broadcast in May.
After racking up 6,028 episodes of both The Late Show and Late Night, his previous show on NBC that debuted February 1, 1982, Letterman will hand over hosting duties of The Late Show to Stephen Colbert.
Letterman debuted on CBS with The Late Show on August 30, 1993, which has been nominated for 73 Emmy Awards, winning seven times. He was won a Peabody Award, been a Kennedy Center Honoree, and is a pioneer in the field of Alka Seltzer suit technology.
