Yemen Mosque Blasts Kill Dozens During Eid Prayers

Two suspected suicide bombers launched the attack in the capital, Sanaa, during Eid-Al-Adha prayers.

Dozens of people died and many people were injured after suicide bombers launched twin attacks on a Shia mosque in Yemen's capital Sanaa Thursday.

The blasts took place as people gathered at the al-Bilili mosque — frequented by the Shia Houthi fighters who control the city — for prayers to mark Eid al-Adha, which is the most important holiday in the Islamic calendar, Al Jazeera reported.

Reports on the death toll vary at this stage. Reuters reported at least 10 people had died, citing medical officials and witnesses. AFP reported 25 dead, citing similar sources, and AP has unnamed security officials also saying 25 have been killed so far.

Although no group has claimed responsibility for the blasts, the attack appears to resemble previous attacks by ISIS, according to Reuters. The militant group has killed hundreds of Zaydis — Shia Muslims they believe to be heretical.

An eyewitness who lives near the mosque, identified as Nayaf, told Reuters that he heard one blast quickly followed by another. "We gathered to rescue the wounded. The situation is very painful and blood is everywhere," he added.

This video from the Yemen Journal, which was also published by Al Jazeera, appears to show the moment the second blast hits the mosque. WARNING: graphic, distressing content.
