U.N. Medical Worker Dies Of Ebola In Germany

Despite "intensive medical procedures", the 56-year-old died after contracting the virus in Liberia.

A German hospital said a United Nations medical worker who was being treated for Ebola has died, the Associated Press reported.

Leipzig's St. Georg Hospital said Tuesday that the 56-year-old man, who has not been named publicly, died of the virus overnight despite "intensive medical procedures," according to AP.

The patient had tested positive for Ebola on Oct. 6, prompting the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Liberia to place 41 staff members who may have had close contact with him under "close medical observation," AP reported.

According to AP, he was the third patient to be treated for Ebola in Germany. The first was a Senegalese man infected while working in Sierra Leone for the World Health Organization, who was treated in Hamburg in late August and released on Oct. 3, and returned to his home country after recovering. The other is a Ugandan worker for an Italian aid group who contracted the virus in West Africa and is undergoing treatment in Frankfurt.
