Sixteen people have died during a pop concert in Seongnam, South Korea, after a ventilation grate collapsed beneath their feet on Friday, Yonhap News Agency reported.

Eleven others sustained injuries after they fell into the deep concrete shaft, fire officials said.

The victims of the accident were among 700 people who had gathered to watch an outdoor concert by girl band 4Minute in the city, which is just south of Seoul.
The performance was part of a local festival organized by the provincial government.
The accident took place at at Pangyo Techno Valley — a complex used by tech firms — at around 5:53 p.m. local time (4:53 a.m. ET), Yonhap News Agency reported.
