One Dead, More Than 100 Injured In Kenya University Stampede

One Kenyan student has died and more than 100 were injured in a massive stampede at the University of Nairobi on Sunday.

A Kenyan student died and more than 100 were injured in a stampede at the University of Nairobi on Sunday, following an electricity transformer explosion, Reuters reported.

The incident comes a little over a week after gunmen murdered 148 students at Garissa University College.

The explosion took place at 4 a.m. local time, setting off panic in the women's dormitory. Soon after, everyone in the campus was scrambling to get out, eyewitnesses told Reuters.

Fearing the university was under attack, some students jumped from windows as high as five stores up, according to Reuters.

"The explosion from the transformer went off and there was a succession of the same for about 20 seconds that made many of the students think it was al-Shabaab who had attacked," one of the students told local media.

The injured, most of them with cuts and broken limbs, are now being treated at local hospitals.
