WASHINGTON — Democrats say Mitch McConnell will pay for secretly taped audio of an opposition research strategy session about potential Democratic Senate candidate Ashley Judd in the long run.
"If Mitch McConnell and the NRSC are done feigning outrage and making baseless insinuations about American Bridge, perhaps McConnell would like to explain to the people of Kentucky why he thinks it's okay to mock a political opponent's Christianity and mental health — and use taxpayer-funded staffers to do so," said Chris Harris, a senior advisor at American Bridge 21 Century, a Democratic super PAC. "All in all, today showed why Senator McConnell's approval rating in Kentucky is a measly 37%."
After audio of the strategy session appeared on Mother Jones Tuesday morning, McConnell and his allies began an epic spin war based around Republicans accusing just about everyone allied with the Democratic Party of Watergate-like bugging of his campaign office. McConnell called in the FBI to investigate.
American Bridge denied any involvement in the collection or distribution of the audio posted to Mother Jones' website Tuesday and told BuzzFeed the group has not been contacted by investigators following its release.
