Suspect Arrested In Shooting Death Of New Orleans Cop

Travis Boys allegedly managed to escape his handcuffs and get hold of the police officer's gun.

A man was arrested Sunday in New Orleans after allegedly escaping from his handcuffs and fatally shooting a veteran police officer on Saturday morning.

Officer Daryle Holloway, 46, was bringing Travis Boys, 33, to the New Orleans city jail when Boys escaped from his handcuffs, stole the officer's handgun, and shot him in the head, police spokesman Tyler Gamble said.

The police car then crashed into a utility pole and the suspect fled the vehicle on foot while armed, triggering a manhunt.

According to Gamble, Holloway was brought to a nearby hospital where he died at 9 a.m. local time, about half an hour after he was first shot.

Boys had been arrested on an aggregate assault charge. It remains unclear how he managed to break free of his handcuffs and steal Holloway's weapon, though it is apparent that the officer put up a fight before being shot, the Times-Picayune reported.

The department said on its Facebook page Sunday that Boys had been caught.

"We will bring together every law enforcement resource at our disposal to find, capture and prosecute the person for this heinous crime," the mayor said.
