A fire on a Carnival parade float has killed four people and injured five in the Brazilian port city of Santos.
Reuters reports that the blaze began Tuesday morning when the float struck a power line as it was being moved out of the parade. Carnival, a weeklong Brazilian festival that ends on Mardi Gras, is celebrated annually across Brazil with street festivals, parades and fireworks.
City officials cancelled the rest of the festivities in the wake of the accident. "This is a tragedy for our city," Santos Mayor Paulo Alexandre Barbos told the BBC. "We cannot continue the parade in the current mood. This is a moment of extreme sadness."
The fire comes one month after a horrific nightclub fire took the lives of 233 people in Santa Maria, Brazil, fueling speculation that the country may not be prepared to host the 2014 soccer World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.
