U.S. Marshal Fatally Shot In Louisiana, Alleged Shooter Also Dies

Deputy Marshal Josie Wells was executing a warrant for a fugitive at a local motel when gunfire broke out. The alleged shooter, Jamie Croom, also later died.

The man alleged to have fatally shot a U.S. Marshal in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Tuesday, has also died from gunshot wounds, BuzzFeed News has confirmed.

Jamie Croom was wanted in connection with the shooting deaths of brother and sister Sinica and Lechelle Williams, who were killed Feb. 18 in a parking lot in New Roads, Louisiana.

U.S. Marshals were executing a search warrant for Croom's arrest when shooting broke out, killing Deputy Marshal Josie Wells.

"The team engaged gunfire and Wells was shot. He was immediately transported to an area hospital, where he died," said Drew J. Wade, chief of the Office of Public Affairs for the U.S. Marshals Service.

The incident took place inside a room at the Elm Grove Motel around 11:30 a.m. CT.

Croom was also shot and taken to the hospital, Wade said, noting that no other law enforcement personnel were injured in the incident.

Croom later died of his injuries, a spokesperson for the East Baton Rouge Coroner's Office confirmed to BuzzFeed News.

The FBI and Baton Rouge Police Department are leading an investigation into the incident, Wade said.
