Elderly Nun Allegedly Gang-Raped In India During An Attack On A Convent School

The attack happened in the eastern state of West Bengal.

Police in eastern India are investigating an attack on a convent school on Saturday in which a group of men allegedly gang-raped an elderly nun.

Six men broke into the Convent of Jesus and Mary School in Ranaghat in West Bengal early on Saturday morning and stole money, Archbishop of Calcutta Thomas d'Souza told the BBC.

D'Souza said only three nuns were in the convent when the men broke in, sexually assaulting one nun in her 70s.

"One sister was molested badly. The other two, and a guard, were tied to chairs," he said.

Police told Agence France-Presse that two people had been arrested over the incident.

"A preliminary investigation has revealed that a nun at the school was gagged and gang-raped," police inspector general Anuj Sharma said.

The elderly nun is said to be recovering in hospital.

Archbishop D'Souza told the BBC that the men also vandalized the school's chapel and stole sacred religious items.

He told DNA India that the school's surveillance cameras captured footage of the men.

The attack comes amid a national debate on sexual violence against women in India, following the government's decision to ban a documentary on a brutal 2012 gang-rape that killed a woman in Delhi.

The documentary featured an interview with one of the woman's murderers, Mukesh Singh, in which he said women are responsible for their rapes.

To protest the outlawing of the documentary, Indian broadcaster NDTV halted its programming and aired a blank screen for an hour last Sunday night.

Earlier this month, an angry mob broke into a police station in northeast India and beat to death a man who had been accused of raping a woman.
