Police in the Netherlands have arrested 60 people following clashes between supporters and opponents of the controversial Christmastime tradition known as "Black Pete".
The unrest occurred at a festival in the city of Gouda, in which Saint Nicholas, the Dutch version of Santa, is accompanied by his side-kick "Black Pete", who is usually played by a white performer in blackface.
The tradition has become increasingly controversial in the Netherlands as the country's immigrant population expands, with critics calling the much-loved tradition racist.
Protestors turned out in large numbers to demonstrate against the festival, with Reuters reporting that many were arresting for not staying in designated protest areas well away from the festivities.
