Police Believe 2-Year-Old Boy Accidentally Shot And Killed His Father

Divine Vaniah Chambliss, 31, was found dead inside his Hoover, Alabama, apartment on Tuesday, police said.

A 2-year-old boy accidentally killed his father in Hoover, Alabama, after finding a loaded handgun, according to a preliminary police investigation.

A family member called police Tuesday afternoon after she returned home from work and found 31-year-old Divine Vaniah Chambliss dead, the Hoover Police Department said. When officers arrived, they found Chambliss had a gunshot wound to his head.

Chambliss and his 2-year-old son seem to have been the only people home in the locked apartment at the time, police said. Based on evidence from the scene, it appeared the toddler had accidentally shot his father.

"There is still no indication that an intruder or any third person was involved in this incident," police said Wednesday after investigating the scene. "Physical evidence has also helped us determine that the victim could not have shot himself."

An autopsy was completed Wednesday, with final results expected within the coming days.
