Police arrested Mark Andrus two days after they found the body parts on 11th and Mission streets, suggesting that they believed he had killed someone and chopped their corpse up.

But citing lack of evidence, police released Andrus rom jail on Feb. 3.

On Saturday, Andrus, 59, died after checking himself into a hospital for reasons that have not yet been released.

"He was definitely our primary person of interest who developed into our main suspect," Officer Grace Gatpandan, a police spokeswoman, said. "We're waiting for more facts to surface from the medical examiner to narrow down the search."

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco medical examiner officially identified the victim as 58-year-old Omar Shahwan, who was a friend and former roommate of Andrus.

Shahwan's family feared foul play after he was last seen on Jan. 21.

Police said security footage showed Andrus near the area where the body parts were dropped.

The suitcase was first reported as a suspicious package on a San Francisco sidewalk. It turned out to be a suitcase containing human body parts.

Police were called to 11th and Mission streets in the South of Market neighborhood around 4:15 p.m., ABC 7 reported. Their investigation of the suitcase closed the street to pedestrians and cars.

Authorities later found more body parts within a three block radius of where the suitcase was found.

"There was one crime scene — it was just very large," Police Officer Grace Gatpandan said at the time.

The San Francisco medical examiner relied on DNA testing to determine the identity of the body.
