At Least 60 People Were Cited At 4/20 Celebrations In Denver

Pot may be legal in Denver, but you still can't smoke it in public.

As people in Denver toked up in anticipation of 4/20, police sent out reminders that smoking in public or selling it outside of retail pot shops is still illegal.

On Saturday, about 60 people were cited for violating Colorado's marijuana law, the Denver Police Department said.

Celebrations took place around the area over the weekend as April 20 approached. It was the second unofficial pot holiday since Colorado approved recreation use of marijuana.

Amid the festivities, police asked marijuana users to consume responsibly.

Denver police added on Sunday they had seen no major issues, the Associated Press reported.

The Denver Post estimated 125,000 people turned out over the weekend for the annual rally in Civic Center Park. Other events also took place around the city.

Downtown Denver's 4/20 fun included marijuana-related merchandise and music, with rapper Rick Ross performing at 4:20 p.m. MT on Sunday.

No official event was planned for Monday — 4/20 itself — at the Civic Center. The University of Colorado Boulder also announced it would operate as normal on Monday. For the last three years, the school has shut down on 4/20 to avoid "disruptive gatherings," chancellor Philip P. DiStefano said in a letter to students. The lawn area of the campus' Norlin Quad would still be closed, he added.

"We have made great strides over the past three years, and I thank all of you for your patience and cooperation in helping us toward that goal," he said.
