Meet Kirobo, your new robotic Japanese space companion.

Space is a dark, vast, and scary place...

And it can get pretty lonely out there...

Which is why Japanese scientists created Kirobo, a space companion robot.

He's just over a foot tall, has facial and language recognition technology, and is fluent in Japanese.

His primary job will be to act as an "emotional anchor" for isolated astronauts and he's heading to the International Space Station in November.

Normally, government-funded robots are terrifying...

But this little guy seems pretty harmless. Just look at him showing off in this zero gravity test

I mean, what could go wrong?
