Valdis Dombrovskis has announced his resignation as the Prime Minister of Latvia.
He has taken political responsibility of the tragic accident in which the roof of a supermarket in Riga, Latvia's capital, collapsed and killed 54 people, including rescue workers, and injured 40 others.
He made the announcement at a meeting with President Andris Berzins.
"I announce resigning from the post of prime minister, taking political responsibility for ... the tragedy," Dombrovskis said, according to local news agency BNS.
The prime minister's spokesman Martins Panke confirmed the resignation to Reuters.
Over the weekend, Dombrovskis called for a three-day period of mourning which started on Saturday and ended on Monday. "In our thoughts we are together with all those stricken by this tragedy," he said. "No matter what the cause of the tragedy is, the number of victims is too big."
His resignation means that his government automatically falls. He was the longest serving Prime Minister in Latvian history.
