GOP Chair Resigns After Racist "Daily Show" Interview

Don Yelton has resigned after claiming "lazy black people" are looking for government handouts on The Daily Show.

North Carolina county precinct GOP chair Don Yelton has resigned after appearing in an offensive interview on The Daily Show.

In an interview conducted by Aasif Mandvi about North Carolina's new voter ID law, Yelton said that "lazy black people" want "the government to give them everything." The Justice Department has sued North Carolina over the law, but Yelton insisted that the law was not racist.

Yelton admitted he had been called a bigot before, but said it wasn't true because one of his best friends is black. He also added, "Now you have a black person using the term, 'N— this and n— that,' and it's OK for them to do it."

A spokesman for the Buncombe County Republican Party, Nathan West, confirmed that Yelton had stepped down, and that the party asked for Yelton's resignation after the interview aired.
