Avalanche On Mount Everest Kills Four

An Australian tourist and three Tibetans have died in an avalanche on Mount Everest while touring a restricted area.

Three local herders and one Australian tourist have died in an avalanche at Mount Everest on Sunday evening. A local tourist group reportedly organized a tour of an off-limits area of the mountain. The group included a tour guide, two cooks, plus the the three herders and the one Australian tourist.

The Australian Embassy has confirmed the death of a 60-year-old man in Tibet, and the Xinhua News Agency has said officials in Shigatse say that following a rescue attempt, the man died as a result of altitude sickness, poor health and age.

A state broadcaster has said that 154 people who were stranded because of the avalanche were rescued on Tuesday.
