Massive Crash On Icy Pennsylvania Highway Causes 50-100 Vehicle Pile Up

Multiple crashes along the Pennsylvania turnpike Friday created a massive back-up for hours. Several injured motorists were transported to local hospitals.

Early this morning, NBC 10 reported a massive multi-car accident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

The PA Turnpike Commission lifted speed restrictions a few hours before the initial accident.

With snow leaving PA by 4 a.m., the Turnpike plans to lift all speed and trailer restrictions today at 6 a.m. -- in time for a.m. rush.

At first, 50 cars were reported in the major pileup.

In total, between 50 and 100 cars were involved in the massive pileup.

Traffic was backed up for at least 5 miles, reported NBC 10.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission enacted "Plan X" to combat the accident scene.

"Plan X, is the method by which the Commission, in emergency situations such as multiple vehicle accidents, closes certain sections of the Turnpike and reroutes traffic around the affected sections."

Abington Memorial Hospital has received 16 injured people, including five trauma patients and 11 with minor injuries, reported CNN.

Around 2:30pm local time, the highway reopened after hours of standstill.
