Where Your Chocolate Dollars Go

Lots to marketing, not much to cocoa farmers.

Only a small fraction of the price of a chocolate bar goes to the farmers who grow the cocoa, according to an analysis [PDF] by anti-poverty organization Oxfam. Almost three times as much goes to marketing, and Oxfam was inspired to make the above spot spoofing chocolate ads directed at women.

Oxfam's report also notes that female cocoa farmers tend to get paid less than men and have less access to training that might help them make more. The report calls on the biggest chocolate-producing brands — Mars, Mondelez International, and Nestlé — to investigate working conditions, especially for women, and to require that their cocoa suppliers pay farmers a living wage.
