Everyone from DailyKos to Rick Santorum spent Tuesday urging Michigan Democrats to vote for the Pennsylvania conservative, for motives ranging from class to mischief, and to the public outrage of the Romney campaign.
But four years ago, Michigan Democrats were heading to the polls for another candidate: Mitt Romney. In 2008 in an effort spearhead by liberal blogger Markos Moulitsas of the Daily Kos, Democrats took to the polls in Michigan to vote for the former Massachusetts Governor, in an effort to extend the Republican primary.
Romney's win in 2008 gave his campaign a shot of momentum, and prolonged his campaign until Super Tuesday. And although exit polls showed liberal voters actually went for McCain in the primary, Moulitsas declared the campaign a success.
And he's at it again: Moulitsas launched a similar campaign known as Operation Hilarity, to again prolong the Republican campaign.
“It’s an opportunity for Democrats to actually help prolong this election a little bit longer because we’ve seen that the longer this drags out the worse it is for Mitt Romney,” Moulitsas told Keith Olbermann. “Rick Santorum and the best it is for Barack Obama.”
