The [new law](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/davidmack/biden-signs-respect-marriage-act) will guarantee the federal government recognizes marriages for same-sex and interracial couples should the Supreme Court attempt something similar to its termination of _Roe v. Wade_. It also formally repeals the 1996 law that first denied federal rights and benefits to same-sex couples.
