In 2002 Lalo Alcaraz made this cartoon.
On Friday, it actually happened.
"It took me about a day to really start tripping out on it," Alcaraz told BuzzFeed.
"At first I was like, 'Oh that's a crazy coincidence, then as I looked at more of the details, the angle of the hand, his headdress, I was like 'Gosh it's like aiming a rocket at Mars and hitting it,'" he said.
Alcaraz said what made it weird for him is sometimes he takes days with the concept for a cartoon, working it out in his mind, drawing it, and making revisions.
But with this cartoon, the image came to his mind and he just drew it on the spot.
Alcaraz said the reason it struck a chord with people is because more than a decade later, the issue of sports teams using redface and insensitive mascots is still going strong.
"The sad part is I have a friend whose daughter is half-Navajo. She posted on Facebook that this cartoon makes her real sad but the photo makes her even sadder," Alcaraz said.
"I think the cartoon should make you mad, but the photo should make you madder. This was 12 years ago, and still, here we are."
