Pakistani Human Rights Activist Sabeen Mahmud Killed By Gunmen

The well-known human rights advocate was shot in her car after participating in an event bringing attention to missing activists in Pakistan's largest province. She was pronounced dead after being rushed to a hospital.

It's the responsibility of the Pak govt to find the killers of #SabeenMahmud ASAP and establish who benefited from it

Shortly after hosting a talk on missing activists, Sabeen Mahmud, a well-known Pakistani human rights advocate, was fatally shot Friday in the city of Karachi.

Reuters reported that Mahmud was shot in her car after leaving T2F, the coffeehouse formerly known as The Second Floor that she owned and where she hosted events. Her mother was also wounded in the attack.

Tariq Dharejo, a senior police official, told Reuters that Mahmud was shot by two gunmen on a motorcycle.

Mahmud was shot four times at close range, with bullets going through her shoulder, chest, and abdomen, Al Jazeera reported. She was pronounced dead on arrival at the National Medical Centre hospital at 9:40 p.m. local time.

Mahmud had just wrapped up an event at the coffeehouse titled "Unsilencing Balochistan Take 2," which focused on missing activists from Balochistan, Pakistan's largest province.

Mahmud’s last tweet linked to an Instagram photo of the discussion.

Reports of her death unleashed a flood of grief and anger on social media.

Extremely sad to hear about Sabeen Mahmud being killed. More and more I see why it's time to get out. Rip Sabeen, I still can't believe it.

Wondering who got #SabeenMahmud killed? Prob the same people killing innocent people in Balochistan. No need to look outside our borders.

Rest in peace Sabeen Mahmud. This country is not worth the heroes it loses everyday.

#SabeenMahmud died for what she believed in. Died, fearlessly DOING what she believed in. They don't make many like her. What a loss! #RIP
