Authorities Friday released the 911 call made by a police chief of an Atlanta suburb who said he accidentally shot his wife while she slept on New Year's Day.

Peachtree City Police Chief William McCollom, 57, called dispatch early Thursday and said he shot his wife Margaret McCollom, 58, inside their home at about 4:15 a.m.

"The gun was in the bed. I went to move it, I put it to the side and it went off," William McCollom told the dispatcher.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation released the recording made to the Fayette County 911 call center.

William McCollom said he shot his wife twice with at least one bullet going into her back. However agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said she was only struck once with his service weapon.

Margaret McCollom was in critical condition Thursday, The New York Times reported, and the chief was placed on administrative leave.

William McCollom was cooperating with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's inquiry. His wife won't be interviewed until her medical condition improves.

She can be heard crying in the background of the call.

When William McCollom told the dispatcher he was the chief of police for Peachtree City. The operator then asked him to confirm.

"Yeah, unfortunately, yes," William McCollom said.

William McCollom was instructed to put a cloth over his wife's wound as he waited for paramedics to arrive.

"How the hell did this happen?" William McCollom said near the end of the call.
