Typhoon Wipha triggered landslides and flooding, caused many deaths on on Izu Oshima island, before making its way up the country's east coast, grounding hundreds of flights, and paralyzing public transportation in Tokyo during morning's rush hour.
Rescue workers found 16 bodies, many of them were buried by mudslides or died when their homes collapsed, on Izu Oshima island, a popular tourist destination about 75 miles south of Tokyo, officials said. And the death of a woman in western Tokyo was confirmed by police.
